Student Visa Extension
If your Australian studies will continue beyond your current visa expiry, you may need to obtain a new Confirmation of Enrolment and lodge a new Student visa (Subclass 500) application before your existing visa ends.
An Australian Student visa cannot simply be extended. You must make a new Subclass 500 application and independently satisfy the current requirements. Lodging late or lodging an invalid application can place your lawful status and future visa options at risk.
When might you need a new Student visa?
You may need another Student visa if your course end date is later than your visa expiry, you start a further course, complete a genuine packaged pathway, or need additional study after an approved deferral, suspension, course transfer or research delay.
First check your current visa expiry and conditions in VEVO, then compare them with every active Confirmation of Enrolment. Do not rely only on a student card, provider portal or expected graduation date.
Common extension scenarios
Start with your CoE and course status
Ask your education provider whether you need a revised or new Confirmation of Enrolment and what academic or administrative evidence is required. The CoE must accurately reflect the course, provider, location and proposed study dates.
If you are applying for a package of courses, include every relevant CoE code in the visa application. Home Affairs may calculate the visa period using the enrolment information supplied.
The new Student visa process
Check visa and enrolment dates
Use VEVO and current CoEs to identify the expiry gap, visa conditions and urgency.
Secure the required CoE
Resolve provider requirements and obtain accurate enrolment evidence covering the remaining study.
Extend OSHC without a gap
Arrange paid cover for the proposed visa period for every applicant included in the application.
Prepare current visa evidence
Address Genuine Student, finances, English where required, health, character and study history.
Lodge a valid application in time
Submit through ImmiAccount before expiry and monitor messages, bridging status and document requests.
Can you apply while in Australia?
You can apply onshore only if you satisfy the valid-application rules. Certain substantive visa holders cannot lodge a Student visa application in Australia, including holders of a Visitor visa (Subclass 600), Electronic Travel Authority (Subclass 601), eVisitor (Subclass 651), Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485) and other listed subclasses.
A No Further Stay condition or previous immigration history can also affect onshore options. Check the exact visa and conditions before relying on an Australian application.
Genuine Student requirement
A further application must still satisfy the Genuine Student requirement. Explain why additional study is necessary, how the course fits your previous education and career, what changed in your timeline, and why studying in Australia remains your primary reason for the visa.
Support the explanation with provider records, academic results, approved deferral or extension evidence, revised research plan, new course rationale and documents showing your current circumstances. Use your own truthful account and keep it consistent with previous applications.
Overseas Student Health Cover
You and included family members must hold paid Overseas Student Health Cover for the proposed visa period unless an exception applies. Onshore applicants should ensure continuous coverage with no gap between existing health insurance and the extended OSHC.
Home Affairs requires the insurer, coverage dates and policy information specified in the application. Missing required OSHC information can lead to refusal.
Financial, English, health and character evidence
You may need to demonstrate genuine access to enough money for tuition, living costs, travel and accompanying family. Do not rely on future employment in Australia to fund your studies.
English evidence requirements depend on the current rules and application circumstances. Health examinations, police certificates, welfare arrangements for minors and education costs for school-age dependants may also apply.
Before your current visa expires
- Check the exact visa expiry and conditions in VEVO.
- Confirm why additional study time is required and obtain provider evidence.
- Secure every required CoE with accurate course dates.
- Arrange continuous OSHC for all applicants for the proposed period.
- Check that your current visa permits a valid onshore Student visa application.
- Prepare current Genuine Student, financial and supporting evidence.
- Lodge early enough to correct issues and monitor all ImmiAccount requests.
Bridging visa considerations
A valid onshore application lodged while you hold an eligible substantive visa will generally be associated with a Bridging Visa A that can keep you lawful after the current visa ends while the new application is processed. Its commencement and conditions depend on your circumstances.
A Bridging Visa A normally does not allow re-entry after overseas travel. Obtain advice and, where eligible, a Bridging Visa B before leaving Australia. Never assume a pending application allows travel or work.
If your visa has already expired
Act immediately. Options become restricted after expiry, and strict time limits and valid-application barriers can apply. Do not continue relying on an expired visa or wait for the provider to resolve your immigration status.
Course completion and graduation ceremonies
If you have completed your course and only need to attend a later graduation ceremony, another Student visa may not be appropriate. Home Affairs notes that a Visitor visa may be relevant in some circumstances. The right option depends on your location, current visa and purpose.
Documents commonly required
Documents can include passport, current visa and VEVO record, all CoEs, academic transcript, attendance or progress records, provider extension or deferral letter, OSHC, Genuine Student responses and evidence, financial documents, English results where required, health and character records and family documents.
