Diploma of Nursing in Australia
Develop the knowledge, clinical skills and professional behaviours required for beginning practice as an enrolled nurse working under the direct or indirect supervision of a registered nurse.
Choose an NMBA-approved Diploma of Nursing program. To become eligible to apply for enrolled nurse registration, the program must be ANMAC-accredited and listed by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as an approved program of study. Registration remains a separate application.
About the Diploma of Nursing
HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing is the current nationally recognised qualification reflecting the role of an enrolled nurse. Enrolled nurses provide person-centred care within their education, competence and scope, working in collaboration with and under the direct or indirect supervision of a registered nurse.
The course combines nursing theory, simulation and clinical workplace learning. Students develop skills in assessment, care planning, clinical procedures, medication practice, communication, documentation, professional conduct and recognising changes in a person’s condition.
Knowledge and skills you may develop
How the Diploma journey may progress
Confirm program approval and entry
Check the exact program in the NMBA approved programs list and meet the provider’s academic, English, suitability and compliance requirements.
Build nursing foundations
Study health assessment, anatomy and physiology, communication, cultural safety, infection prevention, legal responsibilities and person-centred care.
Develop clinical nursing skills
Practise nursing procedures, medication-related skills, documentation, clinical reasoning and care across different health conditions and life stages.
Complete clinical workplace learning
Complete at least 400 hours in clinical workplace environments as required by the qualification and demonstrate every applicable competency.
Apply for enrolled nurse registration
After completing an approved program, apply through Ahpra and provide evidence that all current NMBA registration standards are met.
Common areas of study
Course units address professional nursing practice, communication, health assessment, clinical care, medication practice, anatomy and physiology, infection prevention, acute and chronic health conditions, mental health, older people, rehabilitation, palliative approaches and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural safety.
Programs may sequence simulation and placements differently. Students must complete the provider’s full approved curriculum, clinical hours and assessment requirements rather than relying only on the national qualification title.
Clinical placement preparation
- Police checks and relevant working-with-children or worker screening.
- Vaccination, immunisation and health evidence required by placement hosts.
- First aid, CPR, manual handling or infection-control preparation.
- Uniform, footwear, equipment and professional presentation.
- Availability for allocated locations, dates and rostered shifts.
- Compliance with confidentiality, conduct and patient-safety obligations.
Enrolled nurse registration
“Enrolled nurse” is a protected title. A graduate cannot practise or use that title until registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. Completion of an approved Diploma of Nursing satisfies the approved qualification component, but applicants must meet all other applicable standards.
The NMBA English language skills registration standard applies to graduates and first-time registration applicants. University or provider admission English requirements are separate and may not be identical. Current Ahpra/NMBA requirements should be reviewed early in the course-planning process.
Potential career settings
After obtaining registration, enrolled nurses may work in hospitals, aged care, rehabilitation, mental health, community health, disability services, primary care or other settings that employ enrolled nurses. Individual scope is influenced by education, competence, employer policy and the clinical context.
Completing the Diploma does not guarantee registration, employment, a graduate position, a skills assessment or a migration outcome. Employers can apply additional selection, health, screening and experience requirements.
Pathway to a Bachelor of Nursing
Some universities offer admission or credit pathways from an eligible Diploma of Nursing into a Bachelor of Nursing. Credit is not automatic and depends on the university, qualification, registration status, recency and individual assessment.
Students seeking registered nurse practice must complete an NMBA-approved Bachelor program and later meet the applicable registration requirements for registered nurses.
Entry and course selection considerations
Providers apply academic, English, interview, inherent-requirement and compliance criteria. Applicants should consider communication, numeracy, digital literacy, physical participation and the emotional responsibilities involved in direct patient care.
Compare NMBA approval, provider registration, campus, duration, clinical placement arrangements, tuition fees, uniforms, equipment, screening costs and student support. International students should confirm that the exact program and provider suit their intended student visa arrangements.
