Nursing Courses and Study Pathways in Australia
Explore education pathways that develop safe, evidence-based and person-centred nursing practice across hospitals, community services, aged care and other healthcare settings.
Nursing is a regulated profession in Australia. To apply for registration, graduates must complete an appropriate Ahpra-approved program and satisfy current Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia registration standards.
About nursing study
Nursing courses combine health science, clinical reasoning, communication, medication knowledge, professional practice and supervised clinical learning. Students learn to assess health needs, plan care, respond to deterioration and work collaboratively with people, families and multidisciplinary teams.
The correct course depends on whether you want to become an enrolled nurse, registered nurse or undertake advanced study after registration. These pathways lead to different scopes of practice and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Capabilities you may develop
Common nursing study pathways
Diploma of Nursing
An approved diploma pathway may prepare eligible graduates to apply for enrolled nurse registration after meeting all NMBA requirements.
Bachelor of Nursing
An approved bachelor degree is a common entry-to-practice pathway for applicants seeking registered nurse registration.
Graduate-entry nursing
Some approved postgraduate programs prepare eligible graduates from other disciplines for initial registered nurse practice.
Post-registration study
Qualified nurses may develop capability in leadership, education, research, advanced practice or a clinical specialty.
Theory, simulation and clinical placement
Students study anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, mental health, acute and chronic care, communication, cultural safety, research and professional standards. Course content varies by qualification level and university or training provider.
Simulation laboratories and supervised placements help students apply knowledge in practice. Placement schedules and locations are determined by providers and health services, and may involve travel, shift work or periods outside the usual teaching timetable.
Prepare for nursing study
- Confirm the exact course appears on Ahpra's approved-program list.
- Review academic prerequisites and English requirements.
- Prepare for placement compliance and health screening.
- Strengthen communication, numeracy and study skills.
- Understand the physical and emotional demands of practice.
- Plan for placement travel, schedules and related expenses.
Placement and compliance requirements
Before placement, students may need immunisation evidence, police checks, working-with-children clearance, first aid certification, mask-fit testing or other documents. Requirements can change and differ between jurisdictions and placement partners.
Students must meet professional behaviour, confidentiality, safety and inherent requirement expectations throughout training. A provider can explain reasonable adjustments, but adjustments cannot remove essential safe-practice requirements.
Potential career environments
Registered and enrolled nurses work within their authorised scope in hospitals, aged care, primary care, community health, mental health, rehabilitation and other services. Opportunities depend on registration type, experience, employer needs and any additional specialist preparation.
A nursing qualification does not guarantee registration, employment, salary, migration eligibility or a particular clinical role. Registration and immigration are separate processes with their own current criteria.
Admission and English requirements
Admission criteria may include prior education, prerequisite science study, academic performance, English proficiency and course-specific inherent requirements. Graduate-entry programs can also assess the content and recency of previous tertiary study.
University admission English requirements and the NMBA English-language skills registration standard are related but separate. Applicants should check both rather than assuming an admission result guarantees future registration.
