Professional Year Program
A Professional Year Program helps eligible Australian graduates build workplace communication, job-readiness and industry experience through structured professional learning and an Australian internship in their field.
Current program availability must be checked before enrolment. ICT and Engineering Professional Year pathways remain relevant. New Accounting Professional Year enrolments ceased on 5 March 2025, and the accounting bodies stated that all program activity would conclude by 1 May 2026.
What is a Professional Year Program?
A Professional Year is a structured graduate-development program designed to bridge the gap between Australian study and professional employment. It combines formal learning about Australian workplace practice with practical industry exposure.
Programs generally run for at least 12 months and can include communication, teamwork, ethics, workplace culture, career planning, job-search preparation and a supervised internship. Exact delivery, eligibility and assessment rules depend on the authorised professional body and approved provider.
Current Professional Year fields
ACS Professional Year in IT
The Australian Computer Society Professional Year develops professional communication, workplace performance, networking and career-management skills and includes an Australian ICT internship arranged through an accredited provider.
Current ACS entry requirements include an Australian IT-related bachelor's degree or higher, satisfaction of the Australian Study Requirement, Competent English evidence from an accepted recent test, a suitable passport and visa providing full work and study rights for at least 365 days from program commencement, and a provider interview.
Professional Year in Engineering
The engineering program supports eligible international engineering graduates in understanding Australian industry practice and employer expectations. It combines formal professional development with a supervised engineering placement.
Eligibility can include an appropriate Australian engineering qualification completed within the required period, suitable English, an eligible visa or visa application and a relevant migration skills assessment. Applicants must confirm the current criteria directly with Engineers Australia or its authorised delivery arrangements before enrolling.
Program learning and internship
Eligibility assessment
Check the qualification, field, graduation date, English, visa validity, work rights and professional-body criteria.
Professional workplace learning
Develop communication, teamwork, ethics, meetings, presentations and Australian workplace awareness.
Career preparation
Improve resumes, cover letters, interviews, networking, job-search strategy and professional branding.
Industry internship
Apply technical and interpersonal skills in a supervised placement aligned with program standards.
Completion and records
Satisfy attendance, assessment and placement requirements and retain the official completion evidence.
General eligibility considerations
Eligibility differs between ICT and engineering. Providers can require a relevant Australian degree, satisfaction of the Australian Study Requirement, recent graduation, an accepted English result, a relevant skills or qualification assessment and sufficient visa validity with unrestricted work and study rights.
Do not enrol based only on a provider advertisement. Confirm that the provider is currently accredited by the appropriate professional body and obtain written confirmation that your qualification, visa and English evidence meet the current program rules.
Professional Year and migration points
Under the current General Skilled Migration points test, an eligible completed Professional Year in Australia can attract five points. At the time of invitation, it must have been completed in the nominated occupation or a closely related occupation, over at least 12 months, in Australia and within the preceding four years.
The program must be provided through an organisation recognised for Professional Year purposes. Points rules are assessed separately at invitation and visa stages; completion does not guarantee an invitation, nomination or visa grant.
Before enrolling in a Professional Year
- Confirm that a current program exists for your professional field.
- Verify the provider's accreditation with ACS or the relevant engineering body.
- Check your qualification, English result and graduation-date eligibility.
- Ensure your visa provides sufficient validity and the required work and study rights.
- Review internship arrangements, location, schedule, attendance and assessment rules.
- Understand all fees, refund conditions and consequences of changing visa status.
- Obtain separate advice before relying on the program for migration points.
Choosing a Professional Year provider
Compare only providers currently accredited by the relevant professional body. Review delivery locations, class format, start dates, internship sourcing, host screening, mentoring, assessment, attendance, fees, refunds and support if a placement changes.
Ask whether the internship is guaranteed under the authorised program, how the host role relates to your field, whether extra travel is required and what happens if your visa validity becomes insufficient.
Visa and work-right considerations
The program itself does not grant a visa or extend an existing visa. You must maintain a visa that permits the required study and placement activity for the whole program. Check VEVO and obtain advice before changing visa, employer, course load or program dates.
Documents commonly required
Documents can include passport, current visa and VEVO evidence, Australian degree and transcripts, completion letter, English result, CV, Australian Study Requirement or qualification assessment, migration skills assessment where applicable and provider interview records.
Outcomes and limitations
A Professional Year can strengthen workplace familiarity, professional communication, networks and Australian experience. It does not guarantee paid employment, employer sponsorship, a positive skills assessment, migration points, an invitation or permanent residence.
